Star Wars Gangsta Rap
This rap song was initially written around 2000 and later animated by Thomas Lee as a practice in flash animation. From there the video spread like wildfire. In 2001 it was named the Best Online Comedy Videos by somebody. Later it was a finalist in a Star Wars Fan Film competition, and was shown on VH1 and Sci-Fi networks. In 2004, the animation was reworked and consequently looks much better than the original. Some have said this video has had 20 million plays online, but, with the number of video sharing sites that this video is on, it is too hard to definitively say.
The animation of the second version often gets most of the press, but turn of the phrase shouldn’t be ignored. Really this is a ton of different raps all wrapped up in one. The character of different dramatic moments in the original trilogy are reflected in a hip-hop light. The gangsta rap does a really good job of keep the audience in limbo, asking if this is for real. There is a subtlety about it that is not found in other hack jobs. Watch Below.
If you liked this, watch The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Don’t ask, just watch.
